HEC Needs Assessment Report Released

The High-End Computing (HEC) Program has released the 2020 NASA High-End Computing Needs Assessment. Called for by the NASA Science Mission’s Strategy for Data Management and Computing for Groundbreaking Science 2019–2024 and the Agency’s Capability Portfolio Management Requirements policy, the HEC Needs Assessment report documents the HEC users’ needs raised during a virtual workshop that took place June 1–19, 2020 in terms of computing capacity, technology, services, human resources, and programmatic. The report identified a number of needs, including but not limited to substantially more computing capacity, improved new processor (GPU) access, parallel programming expertise, funding for modernizing legacy codes, and improved management policies to enable external collaboration. The HEC Program will use the information to develop future investment and program implementation strategies.
