PROCESS OVERVIEW:
AERONAUTICS RESEARCH MISSION DIRECTORATE
EXPLORATION SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT MISSION DIRECTORATE
NASA ENGINEERING AND SAFETY CENTER
SPACE OPERATIONS MISSION DIRECTORATE
SPACE TECHNOLOGY MISSION DIRECTORATE

Note: If you are supported by the Science Mission Directorate (SMD), please see instructions in the Science Mission Directorate Process Overview.

If you are currently supported to perform NASA research for one of the following organizations:

  • Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD)
  • Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate (HEOMD)
  • NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC)
  • Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD)

and you require NASA High-End Computing (HEC) resources; you can request specific computing time allocations on HEC resources at the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) facility located at NASA Ames Research Center.

If you are supported by NASA to perform research not sponsored by one of the four Mission Directorates (ARMD, HEOMD, SMD, and STMD) or NESC, you can request computing time allocations under the miscellaneous (MISC) category. Please note that the MISC category does not have a share of HEC resources, so requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis with no guarantee of an award of computer time.

Information on all available HEC resources, including computing systems, storage, and support services, can be found on Systems & Services At A Glance.

Please refer to the guidance below for how and when to submit requests. Please direct questions to support@hec.nasa.gov.

SUBMIT A NEW REQUEST FOR HEC RESOURCES

Overview and New Requests

If your project requires use of HEC resources, you must submit a request in the HEC Request Management System (RMS) per the process below. Note: This process does not guarantee a HEC allocation for your project.

Submit your request in HEC RMS

  1. Section I: Estimate your start date and project duration matching your funding. Note: If your project/funding does not have an end date, please work with your funding manager to establish a date that is amicable.
  2. Section II: Select the appropriate Funding Type.
  3. Follow the instructions for Sections III–VI.
  4. Submit your request.
  5. Make a PDF of your request (see instructions within RMS) for your records.

Requests submitted by July 20 will be considered for awards beginning October 1. No direct funding will be provided through this award of computing time. Any request not submitted by the deadline for the regular cycle will be considered out of cycle, and awards will only be made if capacity is available.

Refer to the HEC RMS Quick-Start Guide for more guidance.

MODIFY AN ACTIVE ALLOCATION OF HEC RESOURCES

Overview

All Mission Directorates have shifted from annual to multi-year requests for HEC resources covering your project's full period of performance, enabling one-time submission of requests. If there are no changes to your project’s computing requirements, your future year requests will be automatically considered, and allocations will be issued prior to the start of each year of your project. You may also modify your existing request (increase or decrease of HEC resources) if your requirements change over the HEC allocation period.

Modification Requests

If you need to modify your current or future-year HEC request/allocation, you must submit a modification request in the HEC Request Management System (RMS). In the Requests menu, select Modify Request.

Urgent requests may be accompanied by an email to support@hec.nasa.gov

While modifications are not guaranteed, your sponsoring Mission Directorate will make every attempt to satisfy your request. Decisions will be based on previous usage, available capacity, and mission priorities. As such, please be advised that if modifications are issued to your HEC allocation, they may differ from your request.

Refer to the HEC RMS Quick-Start Guide for more guidance.
